Autumn festival in the peaceful city of Japan
Nagasaki Kunchi festival originates from the dance of two dancers offering to the gods at Suwa temple.
In the Edo period, when Japan implemented a seclusion policy with foreign countries, Nagasaki was the only city of the country to trade with China and the Netherlands. As a result, the port city has produced cultural festivals between the West and the tradition. Nagasaki Kunchi is one of those festivals featuring that highlight.
The autumn festival held on the 9th will be called O-Kunichi. Autumn is also the season when farmers give their best products to the gods to show their gratitude. The offering to the god called "Kunichi" is similar to the 9th day. The word "Kunichi" in Nagasaki Kunchi festival is said to have originated there.
The festival is held from 7 to 9 of October every year. The most unique activity is the dances assigned to the neighborhood. To watch the same dance again, visitors have to wait until 7 years later as they change each year. This activity originated from offering dance to the gods at Suwa temple of two dancers.
When coming to the festival, visitors will witness the parade and procession to Otabi-sou (procession god down the mountain). In addition to traditional dances, visitors cannot miss the dance that recreates the history of Japanese trade with China and the Netherlands.
For Vietnamese tourists, Go-shuinsen is a dance not to be missed when coming to Nagasaki Kunchi festival. The dance recreates the scene where trader Sotaro Araki takes Princess Ngoc Hoa to her homeland. This charming environment is treasured by the Japanese and the princess is also referred to by the Japanese as Anio - san.
